Today is the 23rd day this month we have acknowledged the prevalence of breast cancer in the world. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you don't know that by now, you surely would have if you recently traveled through the towns of Raymond and South Bend, Washington.
My husband and I were on our way to the southwestern coast to visit his parents for the weekend. Passing through these quiet towns where oyster farming is a major industry, we were astounded at the amount of pink ribbons everywhere, flapping in the breeze off Wilapa Bay.
Pink ribbons on the iron art sculptures of animals and people sprinkled on Raymond's sidewalks. Light poles decorated like May poles, in pink. Benches along the South Bend waterfront. Posters with reminders about annual screenings. Pastel streamers hither and yon.
I appreciate that advocates continue to speak up about breast cancer, its preventions, its symptoms, its treatments, and its advances towards a cure. Do a Google search, and you'll come up with almost 6,000,000 hits. There are websites to answer questions, cite statistics, provide message boards, and promote fundraising efforts.
Here are a few. Susan G. Komen for the Cure American Cancer Society National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Beware the myths and the misquoting of statistics. Choose wisely among those who are selling pink this's and thats in the name of research funding. Know and understand your resources. Stay educated.
Talk to a survivor. They are willing to speak up and share their story of finding the lump, seeing the scan, or having the surgery. Losing a breast. Or both. And celebrating each day as it comes.
Talk to your doctor. Learn how to do your own self-exam. Ask questions. If you don't understand, speak up and ask again.
Breast cancer isn't the only disease that takes the lives of women. But it remains high on the list. Every woman touched by breast cancer is a RemarkAble Woman. Stay aware so you can stay alive.

Great Post! Keep up the excellent word.
Love & Gratitude,
Tina
